This book examines the nature of historical writing in ancient India and evaluates the historiographical traditions of early Indian civilization. Ganguly challenges the view that ancient Indians lacked a historical sense by demonstrating how literary texts, inscriptions, coins, archaeology, and foreign accounts collectively contribute to reconstructing India's past. The work also discusses major historical controversies, including the Ramagupta problem, Gupta numismatics, and the use of epigraphic evidence in historical research.
