N2 - The book examines the historical and archaeological basis of the Rāmāyaṇa, combining textual analysis with evidence from archaeology, geography, flora and fauna, and the traditions of indigenous communities. Sankalia argues that the Rāmāyaṇa in its present form contains substantial mythical and later legendary elements, and investigates the possible historical identities of figures and places mentioned in the epic
