This edited book introduces the concept of "re-use", showing how societies adapt ideas, symbols, institutions, artistic forms, and cultural traditions from the past to create new meanings in the present. Through essays on South Asian art, architecture, religion, politics, theatre, jewellery, and cultural practices, the contributors demonstrate that social and political development is not a simple linear process but often involves the reinterpretation and reintegration of earlier traditions. The book offers an interdisciplinary perspective combining art history, political science, sociology, and cultural studies.
