Gender Equality in Rural India focuses on son preference and the extent to which economic development has resulted in positive changes in women's empowerment and reproductive health.
The book examines gender inequality in rural India with special focus on son preference, women’s empowerment, fertility behavior, and reproductive health. Based on a long-term village study in Maharashtra, Carol Vlassoff analyzes how economic development affects women’s social and economic status. The study argues that education alone is insufficient for gender equality and highlights the importance of women’s employment, autonomy, and social change in improving rural women’s lives.
