This book investigates the relationship between unemployment and social involvement using longitudinal data from the German Socio-Economic Panel Study (SOEP). Bettina Sonnenberg examines whether unemployment causes social isolation and reduced participation in social networks. Using panel-data methods, she argues that many earlier studies overstated the social consequences of unemployment because they could not adequately establish causality. The book contributes to research on social integration, labor markets, social capital, and public policy by providing a more rigorous analysis of how unemployment affects participation in social groups and networks.
