Making News in Global India by Sahana Udupa is an ethnographic study of the changing landscape of Indian journalism in the context of globalization and economic liberalization. Focusing on Bengaluru (formerly Bangalore), the book investigates how news organizations have influenced and responded to the city's emergence as a global technology hub. It argues that news media do more than report events—they actively shape urban identities, political debates, and public perceptions. Drawing on extensive fieldwork within major English- and Kannada-language newspaper organizations, Udupa examines newsroom practices, editorial decision-making, language politics, commercialization, and the interaction between local cultural traditions and global media forces. The book highlights tensions between market-driven journalism and the democratic ideals of the press, showing how issues of caste, class, regional identity, and urban development influence news production. Combining media studies, anthropology, sociology, and political communication, the book offers valuable insights into the role of journalism in shaping contemporary Indian society. It is an important resource for students and researchers in media studies, communication, journalism, sociology, political science, urban studies, and South Asian studies.
