Community Organizing by David S. Walls provides a critical examination of community organizing as a practical approach to achieving democratic social change and promoting social, economic, racial, and environmental justice. The book traces the evolution of the community organizing tradition from the pioneering work of Saul Alinsky in the 1930s to contemporary organizing networks operating across local, metropolitan, state, and national levels. Walls explains the philosophy, principles, and methods of community organizing, including leadership development, power analysis, coalition building, grassroots mobilization, negotiation, and campaign planning. The book also explores the relationship between community organizations, labour unions, faith-based institutions, and political movements, while assessing the strengths and limitations of different organizing models. Special attention is given to how organizers address issues such as inequality, poverty, discrimination, housing, education, and environmental justice through collective action. Combining theoretical analysis with practical insights, the book demonstrates how community organizing contributes to civic participation and democratic governance. It is an important resource for undergraduate and postgraduate students of sociology, political science, social work, public administration, and development studies, as well as community leaders and practitioners engaged in grassroots social change.
