The author charts the history of Inner Asia from the arrival of Islam. The contemporary focus rests on the seven countries which comprise Eurasia. Since 1991, a divergent literature has evolved responding to renewed interest in the region. No comprehensive survey exists however and Soucek's book will fill the gap
