Summary, etc The Promise of Power: The Origins of Democracy in India and Autocracy in Pakistan by Maya Tudor investigates one of South Asia's most important political questions: why India developed into the world's largest democracy while Pakistan experienced repeated military interventions and authoritarian governments after independence. Rather than attributing these divergent outcomes solely to constitutional design, leadership, or military strength, Tudor argues that the answer lies in the different organizational capacities of political parties formed during the colonial period. The book demonstrates that the Indian National Congress evolved into a broad-based, mass political organization with deep social roots across regions and communities, enabling democratic institutions to gain legitimacy after independence. In contrast, the All-India Muslim League developed as a more centralized and less socially embedded organization, leaving Pakistan with comparatively weaker civilian institutions and creating opportunities for bureaucratic and military dominance. Through comparative historical analysis, archival evidence, and political theory, Tudor explains how these institutional differences shaped the contrasting political trajectories of the two nations.
