Summary: Hyderabad and Hyderabadis is a collection of Karen Leonard's most significant scholarly essays on the history and society of Hyderabad. Drawing on decades of historical and anthropological research, the book examines the unique political, cultural, and social character of the former princely state. Leonard argues that Hyderabad developed a distinctive cosmopolitan Indo-Muslim culture that differed in important ways from British-administered India, shaped by its rulers, institutions, and diverse communities. The volume contains fourteen essays covering topics such as the political history of Hyderabad, the role of merchant and banking families, urban society, caste relations, religious communities, and cultural identity. It also includes studies of Kayasths, Goswamis, and courtesans, demonstrating how caste, occupation, and social mobility operated within Hyderabad's multicultural environment. Through archival research and historical anthropology, the author highlights the interactions among Hindus, Muslims, and other communities and illustrates the city's importance as a centre of commerce, administration, and intellectual life.
