Summary: Negotiating Religion: Perspectives from Indian History is an edited scholarly volume that examines the historical development of religious ideas, practices, and identities in India. Edited by Rameshwar Prasad Bahuguna, Ranjeeta Dutta, and Farhat Nasreen, the book brings together essays by leading historians who explore religion as a dynamic historical process rather than as a fixed or isolated institution. The volume challenges simplistic narratives of religious conflict and instead highlights the complex interactions among religious communities across different periods of Indian history. The essays are grouped into three thematic sections dealing with religious texts and traditions, the role of divinity and gender, and the formation of religious identities. Topics include Buddhist–Brahmanical relations, Sanskrit intellectual traditions, the life of Ramanuja, goddess worship in early medieval South India, the Bhakti movement, Sufi–Sant interactions, Muslim identity in colonial India, Christianity in Northeast India, religion and nationalism, and communal harmony. The contributors analyze how caste, gender, political authority, social change, and cultural exchange shaped religious practices and institutions throughout Indian history.
