Trade and Trade Routes in Ancient India is a comprehensive study of commercial activity and transportation networks in ancient India. Moti Chandra traces the development of land routes, caravan trade, river routes and maritime trade from the prehistoric and Vedic periods through the Mauryan, Kushana, Gupta and later periods.
The book examines merchants, caravans, ports, ships, trade guilds and major commercial centres, and discusses India's commercial connections with Central Asia, Iran, the Roman Empire, China and Southeast Asia. It also uses evidence from Buddhist, Jain and Sanskrit literature, inscriptions, archaeology and foreign accounts.
