The book investigates the methods and technology used for casting coins in ancient India. Sahni's research was prompted by his discovery at Rohtak in 1936 of an ancient mint site containing thousands of terracotta coin moulds and unfinished coins.
He examines archaeological evidence from Rohtak, Taxila, Mathura, Kashi and other sites, describing different types of moulds, dies and casting processes. The work also compares Indian coin-casting techniques with methods used in China and the Roman world.
